This tool allows you to be interactive with your brainstorming. As you can write this all down on paper and color code it as well, doing a concept map on the computer is more engaging for our students. This tool allows you to customize your concept map anyway you would like, the organization, style, and color, so that it makes since to you. By using this tool, you can go back at anytime and easily take out or add ideas and re-organize. Another advantage to using this tool is that students get more opportunities to practice their typing skills.
Lessons 3-7 in Unit
The student will create an introduction that shows excitement to a reader (creating).

The student will be given a template in google docs that they will fill out as they create their story. Lessons 3-6 will students completing sentences for their introduction, body, and conclusion. Lesson 7 will be for students to do peer-editing. Now, since this lesson unit is set up for 2nd grade, I would probably just use 1 google docs document. It would be a class document. Say I had 16 kids, I would put 16 templates on one google doc with a students name on each template. They would type in only their template, than when it is time for peer-editing, they would have a partner that is assigned to them, that they would peer edit. I would have them change the color of their font for any comments/marks they put for editing their partners template. Without this tool, students would not be able to type up their story, easily correct it instead of doing multiple rough drafts over and over, and they can collaborate with their peers on editing from a click away!

Storytelling is a wonderful tool to use! It provides innovation and creativity through constructing your story in a book form. This tool really engages students and is fun for them to make. There is a lot of ownership and authorship that comes along with constructing your own book! As you can simply do this with paper and pencil/crayons, there is something about the animated and interactive pieces to this tool that make it more rich for students.

Before creating a concept map, students can create a wordle filled with ideas about birthday parties.
If used at the beginning, tagxedo (word cloud creator) allows you to get your mind thinking about your topic, your brainstorming ideas. The more words you come up with the cooler your word cloud looks! If creating a word cloud after your unit/lessons, you are showing everything that you have learned throughout the unit/lessons. word cloud is a fun creative way to throw a bunch of words together, students like designing their own word cloud.

The student will show their writing by reading their story to a partner (applying).

Kidblog allows students to publish their work for others to see. Others may view and comment on your work. This can provide good feedback, collaboration, and sharing ideas.
By using a concept map, have students brainstorm ideas about things they would like to do for their next birthday.
